Heartwood Art of Darkness – Conundrum is a Sunday roast in a glass – a rich, meaty Tasmanian vatted malt that answers the question “how far can you push savoury whisky?” with a grin.
Built from 11-year-old Nant, 6-year-old peated Adams, and 8-year-old Redlands (Old Kempton), all married in a pair of seriously seasoned old soldiers: a 50-year-old ex-Port cask and a 60-year-old ex-Spanish Oloroso sherry cask. Bottled in 500ml at 57% ABV “drinker’s strength” and limited to just 167 bottles from Huntingfield, this is Art of Darkness turned up to umami.
On the nose it’s BBQ lamb roast with a lightly sweet edge; the palate swings sweet and savoury with warm spice, before a lingering, meaty, savoury finish that feels more like a long lunch than a dram. Released in 2024, it’s already one of the cult standouts of the new Art of Darkness line.
Heartwood Art of Darkness – Conundrum: whisky meets roast dinner, and nobody goes home hungry.
