During the 1970s & 1980s, the Sour Mash was Michter's most popular whiskey. The "Sour Mash" moniker originated from the production process, whereby some previously fermented mash is used as a starter for the new batch. With its unique grain selection, it cannot be categorised as a rye or bourbon. After being discontinued in 1989, it made a triumphant return in 2012.
