Waterford rigorously apply the ancient terroir methodology to today’s verdant landscape of Ireland, home of the world’s finest barley.
The story of Waterford begins with a character in the Scotch industry by the name of Mark Reynier. As the former head of Bruichladdich, he championed the idea that barley is a significant input to the end flavour of a whisky. But - and to make a long and complicated story short - Bruichladdich and the Scotch industry in general didn't quite agree. I think part of that is because Scotch - and to a degree, all whisk(e)y - has been all about age, and the longer you age something, the less distinctive the barley influence is on a whisky.
